About This Site

Best Survival Picks publishes hands-on reviews, comparisons and how-to guides for practical emergency gear: personal water filters, hand-crank and solar weather radios, ready-made 72-hour survival kits, long-shelf-life emergency food and fixed-blade bushcraft knives. Everything here is aimed at ordinary households who want to be ready for an outage, a storm or a breakdown without spending a fortune or buying into fear.

Emergency Gear Safety

Nothing on this site replaces official guidance. During a real emergency, follow instructions from local authorities and the National Weather Service, and call 911 when lives are at risk.

Personal water filters remove bacteria and protozoa but most do not remove viruses, chemicals, heavy metals or salt. Do not drink from water that may be contaminated by fuel, floodwater runoff or industrial sources, and boil or chemically treat water when the filter is not rated for the threat.

Fixed-blade knives cause serious cuts. Keep them sheathed when not in use, cut away from your body, keep them away from children and check local laws before carrying one.

Never run a generator, camp stove or charcoal heater indoors or in a closed garage: carbon monoxide kills without warning. Check expiration dates on emergency food and batteries, follow preparation directions, and read allergen labels before you rely on a kit for someone with food allergies or medical needs.
